MAGNIFICANT MONT ST. MICHEL!

Catching up with the blog from our three day holiday two weekends ago, yes I am a little behind. On Sunday we traveled to Mont St. Michel. Over 3 million visitors come to see this magestic monastary every year. The monastery has been built over time starting in 708 and added on to until the 14th century. During the Revolution and until 1863 the abbey was used as a prison. We laughed about how it would be a great place to play hide-and-seek. You would not be found for years!Remember Nixon's 5 o'clock shadow, here's ours! To get this bird's eye view, we climbed over 200 stairs. Way to go Granmuny! At the top of the abbey are the clositer and gardens. The cloister is meant as a communications center inherited from the atrium of the Roman villa, providing acess to all the essential rooms. A passageway, the cloister was also, as in all other monasteries, the space set aside for the monk's personal prayer meditation.
Looking up toward the Merveille and Chatelet. The Merveille on the right often regarded as the jewel of the abbey's architecture, is evidence of the architectural mastery of the 13th century builders who succeeded in perching two blocks of 3-storey buildings on a steep rocky slope. Isn't it amazing what they accomplished without the tools of modern technology. The internal stairway and hall that lead up to the abbey are actually a street within the monastery. Look how tall these walls are!
