THE OLD VS. THE NEW

Our tour of Arles continues........... Continuing our tour of Arles, the above picture shows the restoration being done to the Arena of Arles. Isn't it amazing how close they are able to duplicate the original Arena of over 2000 years ago.
The Arena of Arles is composed of two orders of arcades as you can see here; each with 60 arches (the lower ones are Doric and the upper ones are Corinthian). Today Spanish-style corridas and the traditional festival of the guardians of the Camargue are held here. This is for all the seventh graders at CFI studying Roman history.

Continuing on our tour of Arles, we came upon the Church of Saint-Trophime. The portal at the top of the doors depicts the Last Judgement and some of the low-reliefs are figures of saints. If you click on the photo you can see it more clearly.

We are use to windy narrow streets in France but this is one of the first we saw with steps.

Lavender is seen all over the Provence area in full bloom, but in the spring. Linda, our friend from Indy who traveled with us, has her own lavender farm in Kentucky. So Linda, this one's for you! One of these days we are going to do a blog with pictures of all the cool doors we have seen.

Wow! Hi Susie! It's Marsha here from your Matthew BSF group. Remember me??? The cyclist and runner? Phyllis sent me your link, and I've been scanning through these amazingly beautiful pictures! It looks like you're having a great time and seeing everything! I enjoyed the pictures of the cycling AND the marathon. How awesome! I'll try to check in regularly now. Looks like everyone is doing well. Miss you! The Moses study is a good one!
